InStyle Magazine, 2008 - Notable Wines
“Definitely a wine and a label to watch.” Appellation America
“The 2003 Nero d’Avola is a lovely wine, with lively cherry flavors, hints of fennel and tar, medium tannins and a long finish.” Mercury News
“In your mouth, Negro Amaro is juicy, balanced and lively, with the fruit buoyant rather than sappy, the acid integrated rather than gripping. Best of all, it finishes like a warm Italian evening pleasant, happy, relaxed.” Appellation America

In our glasses: What we're drinking (Friday, January 4, 2008)
2003 Chiarito Vineyard Negro Amaro Mendocino County ($30)
What sold us: John Chiarito has produced the first domestic Negroamaro, the most widely planted Italian red grape varietal in the Puglia region. This thick-skinned, deeply colored grape is often blended with Malvasia Nera to bolster the wine's structure. Intense dark cherry and plum, black licorice, dried herb and a hint of Almond Roca aromas and flavors are layered with savory berry and sweet, dried hay. Tart black berry acidity and soft tannins linger on the long, velvety finish. This nicely balanced wine never flaunts its 15.3 percent alcohol. Enjoy it with most Zinfandel-friendly dishes. Where to find: Traverso's Gourmet Foods (Santa Rosa), The Wine Shop (Healdsburg)
